A large sparrow found in several disjunct ranges on the Pacific Coast from Central Mexico to Tarcoles in Costa Rica. They are unique among New World Sparrows in that they have a co-operative breeding system where up to seven other birds have been recorded as supporting a breeding pair to raise the chicks.
