White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys)

OTHER NAMES: N/A
Latin Etymology: Zonotrichia ("band hair") leucophrys ("white eyebrow")

Adult White-crowned Sparrow (subspecies Z. l. nuttalli) at Berkeley, California - August 2022

Featured Subspecies: Zonotrichia leucophrys nuttali
Weight: 25-28g  /  Length: 15-16cm  /  Wingspan: 21-24cm
NO UK STATUS IUCN Red List: Least Concern

On visiting the US and getting to grips with the New World sparrows for the first time, the white-crowned was for me the first I got to grips with easily - a stark black and white face with a bright orange-yellow beak made it easy to differentiate from the other species that we were regularly seeing. It's an adaptable species capable of adjusting to habitats ranging from the Arctic Circle to deserts!
