A widespread species of sparrow that is largely a migrant breeding species in most of the US and Canada, they are an adaptable species that can be found in forest, farmland and gardens. In breeding plumage they gain a chestnut coloured cap, but this becomes less distinctive in nonbreeding plumage.

 - CHICAGO TO ALASKA ROADTRIP 2024: Common bird in the lower 48 section of the trip.
