A small swift species said to have a cigar shaped torso, Vaux's Swifts breed in the Pacific North West as well as having resident populations in Central America. Unlike many swift species, their natural habitat is nesting in old hollow trees, but in places have adapted to human settlements and will nest in buildings. The subspecies here is apparently occassionally considered a distinct species - the Dusky Backed Swift (Chaetura richmondi).
