A large species of woodcreeper that prefers denser forest than the more common streak-headed, they are furthermore differentiateable in the field by their thick two-toned bill. Previously regarded as part of the Buff-throated Woodcreeper, it has been split since the 1980s, but there is some potential that it may be split further.
