A large powerful buzzard that breeds in North Africa, South East Europe the Middle East and Central Asia, compared to common buzzards they prefer more open habitats such as steppe, semi-desert and dry shrubland. They are generally specialised as hunters of small mammals and reptiles, and have been recorded following wildfires to catch displaced prey.
