A widely distributed species found from the Southern US to Brazil and Argentina, they are quite variable across the range with some populations having the namesake "dusky" cap as near black while in other it is brown. An unusually altitudinally variable species, it ranges from sea level to in some parts of its range, nearly 3000m!
