An omnivorous endemic of the Talamancan Montane Forest where it breeds from 1700m altitude to the timberline. Despite the name, it is a member of the New World Sparrows rather than the finches. They are quite adaptable in their habitat and can also be found in various densities of growth including in scrub and bamboo.
