A vividly coloured finch of Central America that favours wet montane oak forests. In contrast to the female pictured, the male has a brilliant saffron orange belly and a dark turquoise back, though still retains the azure blue cowl seen on the female here. The population in Costa Rica and neighbouring Panama is geographically isolated from the other populations, with the next nearest being on the North side of Nicaragua.
