A diving duck found in North America where they prey on small water animals including molluscs, insects and fish during the breeding season but on their wintering groups are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses and pondweeds. They share their range with the cosmetically similar Canvasback, but that species in much larger and has an all black bill. Their population is currently increasing.
