A widely distributed species found from Texas to Southern Argentina including almost the entire of South America East of the Andes. It is a fairly typical kingfisher in behaviour, hunting small fish and other aquatic prey by diving from a perch - in this instance, the wires above the crocodile enclosure at Rescarte Wildlife Rescue Centre.
