A large and powerfully built earred seal, the California Sea Lion is a familiar species in popular culture due in no small part to it being found in California and easily trainable. Unlike seals, sea lions have a more upright posture and move more easily on land, as well as having external ears. They are abundant in the waters around Monterey particularly, with dozens living in close proximity to humans.
