An extremely widely distributed species found in a temparate band from Europe to Japan across the width of Asia. It comes in a number of variations, mostly about the quantity of the black spots upon its wings although in some populations the spots become more like streaks of the forewings take on a yellowish hue. Their larvae feed on several well known and common plants including dandelion, stinging nettle, broom, viper's bugloss and alfalfa.
