A species originally endemic to Japan that has subsequently become established in North America and Europe where it is considered a major pest. They are known to feed upon around 300 species of plants including crops such as roses, grapes and hops by eating leaves, while the larvae consume the roots of grasses. Several species including a fly, a solitary wasp and certain bacteria have been introduced to their non-native ranges in an attempt to control their populations.
