The most common squirrel in my time in Malaysia and probably the most common mammal on the trip in general, the Plantain Squirrel is a distinctive species with bands of orange, black and white on it's belly that make it easy to recognise, which, combined with it's large size make it easy to spot.  They are quite happy to live in parks in much the same way as grey squirrels are in the UK.  My favourite moment with this species however was when strolling through Kuala Lumpur Botanic Gardens, a shape suddenly thudded on the ground in an open patch of grass - we initially thought it was a branch but when it scurried off back to the treeit had fallen from (and it must have been a good 20m fall at least) it had very much an air of refusing to acknowledge that anyone had seen it be so ungraceful.

The Grey-bellied Squirrel is the smaller and less obvious of the two common squirrel species seen in urban environments in Malaysia - a fairly subtly coloured and drab animal that is found in various habitats right up into theheart of Kuala Lumpur itself, even in heavily managed areas.  It's diet is fairly typical of what you would expect from a squirrel including fruits, seeds, flowers and insects.

A small and common species of squirrel found in Singapore, and indeed, one of only two terrestrial mammals we saw on the entire trip.  Slender Squirrels have a more chipmunk type vibe to them than the other larger species I've photographed - and often appeared to live in small groups based around a single nest location such as the dense fronds of a palm type tree.

As the name suggests, the variable squirrel has a large number of colour variations attached to different subspecies.  While the subspecies of Central Cambodia apears as seen above, they vary as much as subspecies which are entirely pale silver-grey, and a wide array of forms between in combinations of whites, greys and russets. It has been suggested that this diversity may actually represent a complex of closely related species.

The Alpine Marmot is one of the largest rodents in Europe - and indeed the joint largest of the entire squirrel family. It is found in mountain meadows in Southern and Central Europe where they form underground colonies on the slopes and retreat into their tunnels if they detect danger.  My sightings of them were in the Dolomites, but they can be found throughout other mountain ranges such as the Pyranees and, of course the Alps.  They graze on grasses and herbs but may also take grain and invertebrates to supplement their diets.

A very common species found in parks and woodland throughout the UK. It is partially arboreal and can often be seen climbing in the upper reaches of trees, as much as it is on the ground. An introduced species, it carries parasites which are very dangerous to the native red squirrel population and as such the red squirrel has been replaced in much of its range by this species.

The Japanese Squirrel is no way near as common as squirrels in the UK,being a creature of the mountain forests and even there not being present in the densities of the Grey Squirrel in the UK. Human encroachment has made them rarer in Japan and they are rarely seen around most urban areas, although Kamakura is apparently an exception. It is a slightly stockier looking animal than the British species, with more rounded ears and a more snub face.

A distinctively orange squirrel which gives them their name, the Fox Squirrel is originally a species of the Eastern USA, but introductions have lead to it having populations in other places, such as California where I saw them. They favour oak, hickory, walnut, pecan and pine trees, but can be found in a wide range of forested habitats.

The largrest arboreal squirrel of the Western United States, unlike it's counterpart the Eastern Grey, it does not have the substantial introduced ranged outside North America. Their fur is also entirely silver-grey and white, and doesn't have the rust coloured patches like the Eastern. They are more closely tie to forest than their more common counterparts.

Probably the most commonly seen wild terrestrial mammal of my visit to California, the California Ground Squirrel is a large ground dwelling rodent that has adapted fairly well to human habitation. They live in self excavated burrows, and rarely move far from the entrance to it. In colder parts of their range they do hibernate. They do sometimes climb small shrubs to feed.

The indiginous tree squirrel of Europe, the Red Squirrel is somewhat paradoxical in that overall it has an enormous range but within the UK specifically it is significantly struggling due to competition with the non-native grey squirrel which outcompetes it and carries pathogens which are fatal to reds. The result has led to a catastrophic population collapse and Reds are largely extipirated from England. While the population in the UK does have the namesame red fur, other populations are more variable into black, grey and brown such as the individual pictured above.

The smallest of all the chipmunks, they are one of the less arboreal species and are often found in safebrush, along rivers and in confirerous woodland. As a smaller species, they are actually able to be more successful in food scarce environments and support higher population densities in them.  They enter torpor in Winter, which in the colder parts of it's range can be for up to 7 months.

Found in dry and mountain areas of North America, Yellow-bellied marmots are a colonial species found usually at high altitudes in open terrain. A large species of marmot found in North America, the Groundhog is unusual in that it favours lowlands compared to most marmots being species of rocky or mountainous area. They spend much of their times in burrows, which have two to five entrances and average an internal volume of 6 cubic feet in each den.  Famously, there are folk events called Groundhog Day in parts of the US where groundhogs are used to predict the arrival of spring.

A perculiar elongated looking ground squirrel species with a distinctive alternating stripe and spotted pelt. A diurnal species that will dig burrows up to 20ft long with mutliple side passages, the deepest parts of which are used for hibernation which they will perform for up to six months without needing food or water, although the precise mechanisms for how they achieve this are poorly understood.

Not closely related to the Eurasian Red Squirrel, the American Red is a widely adaptable species across temperate and boreal North America. Primarily feeding on nuts and seeds, they are none the less capable of being adaptive to feed on what the environment provides them up to and inclding predating other small mammals.
