A close relation of the Painted Lady found in the UK, their range is largely centred in California, although its range does extend more thinly into the most central US states. They favour plants of the mallow family for their caterpillars. The Painted Lady itself does also occur in North America, and the easiest differentiation point is that the first bar from the tip of the forewing is orange in this species raher than white.
